May God protect you from a mighty one; the nights have seized
from him a treasure beyond reproach.

Your love was nothing but a morning cloud's downpour
in sweetness; far be my love for you from blame.

If death's course should choose to send the more willing of us ahead,
then I consent—may God protect you—to my going first.

عِشْنَا أَلِيفَيْنِ في بَرِّ الهَوى زَمَناً
حَتَّىuntil رَقِيrose بِنَواناwith our separation طائِرُthe bird الشُّومِof ill omen
حَتَّى رَقِي بِنَوانا طائِرُ الشُّومِ
We lived, two close companions, in the land of love for a time,
until the bird of ill omen rose, bearing our separation.
فَشتَّتَتْthen shattered نُوَبُthe calamities الأَيّامِof the days أُلْفَتَناour companionship
فَشتَّتَتْ نُوَبُ الأَيّامِ أُلْفَتَنا
قَسْراًby force ولمand did not يُغْنِهَاavail it ظَنِّيmy conjecture وتَنْجِيمِيand my astrology
قَسْراً ولم يُغْنِهَا ظَنِّي وتَنْجِيمِي
Then the calamities of the days shattered our companionship
by force; neither my conjecture nor my astrology availed it.
