وقالتِand said النَّفْسُthe soul لمّاwhen أَنthat خَلَوْتُI was alone بهاwith it
أَشْكُوI complain إِلَيْهاto it الهَوىlove خِلْواًbereft منof النِّعمِblessings
And my soul said, when I was alone with it,
Complaining to it of love, bereft of blessings:
حَتَّامhow long أَنْتَyou علىupon الضَّرَّاءِadversity مُضْطَجعٌreclining
مُعرِّسٌencamped for the night فيin دِيارِthe abodes of الظُّلْمِinjustice والظُّلَمِand darkness
“How long will you lie amid adversity,
Encamped in the abodes of injustice and darkness?
وفيand in السُّرىnight travel لكَfor you لَوْif أَزْمعتَyou resolved مُرْتَحلاًto depart
بُرْءٌa cure مِنfor الشّوْقِlonging أَوْor بُرْءٌa cure مِنfor العدمِpoverty
And night travel, if you resolved to depart, would offer you
A cure for longing, or a cure for poverty.”
ثُمَّthen اسْتَمَرَّتْit continued بفَضْلِwith further القَوْلِspeech تُنْهِضُنيrousing me
فقُلْتُso I said إِنيindeed I لأَسْتَحْييsurely feel ashamed before بَنيthe sons of الحكَمِal-Hakam
Then it continued, rousing me with further words;
I said: “I am indeed ashamed before the sons of al-Hakam,
المُلْحِفِينَthose who clothe رِداءَthe mantle of الشَّمْسِthe sun مَجدهُمُtheir glory
والمُنْعِلِينَand those who shoe الثُّرَيَّاthe Pleiades أَخْمصthe arch of القَدمِthe foot
Who clothe their glory in the sun’s mantle,
And shoe the arches of their feet with the Pleiades.
أَلِمتُI suffered بالحُبِّfrom love حتىso much that لَوْif دناdrew near أَجليmy appointed end
لَمَّاwould not have وجدْتُI felt لطعْمِin the taste of الموْتِdeath مِنany أَلَمِpain
Love has so pained me that, were my death to draw near,
I would find no pain in the taste of death.
وذادَنيand kept me away كَرمِيmy nobility عَمَّنfrom the one whom ولِهْتُI was infatuated بهwith him
وَيْليwoe to me مِنfrom الحُبِlove أَوor ويْليwoe to me مِنfrom الكَرمِnobility
And my nobility kept me from the one I adored—
Woe to me from love, or woe to me from nobility!
تَخَوَّنَتْنيbetrayed me رجالٌmen طالَماso often شَكَرتْpraised
عَهْدِيmy loyalty وأَثنَتْand lauded بماfor what راعيْتُI honored منof ذِممِpledges
Men have betrayed me who had long praised
My loyalty and extolled the pledges I honored.
لَئِنْif indeed وردْتُI reach سُهَيْلاًSuhayl غِبَّafter ثالِثةٍa third night
لَتَقْرَعَنَّthey will surely gnash عليَّover me السِّنَّthe tooth مِنfrom نَدمِregret
If I reach Suhayl after three nights,
They will surely gnash their teeth over me in regret.
هُناكَthere لاnot تَبْتَغِيseeks غَيْرother than السّناءِglory يَديmy hand
ولاand not تَخِفُّhastens إِلىtoward غَيْرِother than العُلاthe heights قَدمِيmy foot
There my hand seeks nothing but glory,
Nor does my foot hasten toward anything but the heights,
حتَّىuntil تَرانِيyou see me فيin أَدْنَىthe nearest of مَواكِبِهِمْtheir cavalcades
علىupon النَّعامِةal-Na‘ama شَلالاًa plunderer مِنof النِّعمِbounties
Until you see me in the nearest of their cavalcades,
On al-Na‘ama, carrying off bounties,
رَيَّانَsated مِنwith زَفَراتِthe snorts of الخَيْلِthe horses أُورِدُهاI lead them to water
أَمْواهَthe waters of نِيطةNita تَهْوِيthey plunge فيهinto it باللُّجُمِwith the bridles
Sated with the horses’ snorts, I lead them
To Nita’s waters, where they plunge with their bridles,
قُدّامahead of أَرْوعَan awe-inspiring man مِنfrom قَوْمٍa people وجدتهُمI have found them
أَرْعىmore mindful لحقِّof the due of العُلاglory مِنthan سالِفِbygone الأُممِnations
Ahead of an awe-inspiring man from a people I have found
More mindful of glory’s due than the nations of old.”
