To you we journeyed, not to a hill or a familiar abode.
To you we traveled, not for meadow or institute
For you are the dwelling of solace in every scene.
For you are the place of intimacy in every scene

We made tears and a sigh the steeds of our resolve,
We made the horses of determination tears and sighs
so we stood at a lookout, with the landmarks of the dwellings in view.
Thus we became, and the flags of homestead at watch

At times, through love for you, we wander lost in longing’s wilderness,
We roam in the desert of passion for your love awhile
and at times our yearnings drive us onward with song, so we find the way.
And longing drives us awhile so we are guided

حننتI yearned إليكمfor you لاnot لصوتfor the voice of المغردthe songster
When gray doves sing in the grove,
When the doves cooed in the bushes
I yearn for you, not for the songster’s voice.
I longed for you, not for the voice of the singer
وإنand if قصدheaded الورادthe water-seekers يوماone day لموردfor a watering place

And if those seeking water head one day for a watering place,
And if the lovers one day visited a meadow
then by that dwelling I have the sweetest spring.
For me at that place is a sweeter meadow

And if the racers unsheathe the swords of resolve,
And if the racers bared blades of determination
you are the qibla of my quest, even if I am delayed.
You, even if delayed, are my intended destination

And if in love they bring an offering toward you,
And if they drew near in love, nearing you
my soul is my offering, and my affection my sacrificial gift.
My soul is my offering and my love, my courtship

When the companions’ camel-driver chants, humming,
When the guide of the caravan called at Mashmash
I recall the one who has been gone since the time of my promised meeting.
I remembered the one whose promise was clear

I have so changed that my condition in love
Indeed I stayed until my state in passion
is pitied even by my enviers, for what I endure.
Could be lamented for what I face from enviers

Who, then, amid pouring tears, grief, and sorrow,
So who is there in the flowing of tears, sorrow and grief
and the voicing of complaints of anguish, will console me?
And confiding complaints of my conscience made happy

إذاwhen لمnot يطقhe can endure فيin الحبlove حملbearing التجلّدfortitude
For the longing lover has no comfort but his tears,
The comfort of the longing is only their tears
when he cannot bear the burden of fortitude in love.
When unable to bear the burden of patience in love

I shall make the pouring of tears my occupation and my [unclear word],
I will make wiping the tears my task and habit
in hope that I may attain a renewed union.
Perhaps I will be granted union made new

So, fleeing with the Chosen One of the house of Hashim,
So I flee to the Chosen One from Al-Hashim
grant me the nearness to Ahmad for which I hope.
To grant me what I hope for in nearing Ahmad

And renew some blessing—a blessing—as long as a bird sings,
Renew the prayer, however much a bird prays
upon the pure, the purest, the intercessor Muhammad.
Upon the most pure, the intercessor Muhammad
