قاموا على قدم المتاب الأحمدِ
They forsook their beds, luxury, and desire;
They abandoned beds of ease and worldly pleasures,
They stood upon the footing of the most praiseworthy repentance.
And stood with steadfast feet before their Lord.

They drove sleep away from madness and awakened
They banished sleep and chased away their dreams
The eyelid of sleeplessness toward the one and only God.
To wake before their God, the One adored.

أن انسكاب الدمع أخدٌ باليد
They poured out abundant tears when they became certain
They wiped their streaming tears when they discerned
That shedding tears takes one by the hand.
That shedding tears distracts the heart from God.

They never won the heights of truth and faith
Except after forsaking the sweetness of the bed.
Till they forsook the luxury they trod.

Freed from life's turbulences when set free,
And thus they won the most abundant bliss.
So won they the supreme, serene abode.

They fasted in the midday heat and made their inward parts thirst,
They fasted through the days of fierce heat—till
So it came to be quenched from the sweetness of the watering place.
Their parched mouths drank sweetness from their Lord.

They witnessed—may I be your ransom—a sight without equal
O Muhammad, they beheld a vision there,
Among the sights sought by those endowed with understanding.
Beyond what hope aspires where hope has soared.

So aim to gain those heights, and persevere
Paths that bring you therein to the loftiest goal.
In ways that lead to goals so long explored.

You who fall short of an exalted quest—
You will never reach their bounds—so strive.
How can you hope to reach that far reward?

بالهاشميّ الأبطحيّ محمّد
If you cannot vie with them, then seek refuge
If you lack strength to match their mighty thoughts,
With Muhammad, the Hashimite of al-Abtah.
Let glorious ancestry suffice, bestowed.

واطو السباسب للبقيع الغرقد
And undertake a journey to those familiar places,
Make a pilgrimage to those hallowed shrines,
And cross the desert plains to al-Baqiʿ al-Gharqad.
And kiss the dust where noble saints have bowed.

And gain good fortune in a happier station.
And gain while living there beatitude.

O you who seek a glorious destiny,
Whenever you reach the site of that familiar abode,
Though far from that loved place of your abode—

Or come to the outskirts of the sanctuary and the bend,
You have approached a people great and pure;
Convey the greeting of one consumed by love and grief.
Convey to them from one now elsewise owed:

He sings despite the distance and remoteness of the dwellings,
He sings, though distant from his native grounds,
With the tongue of a singer warbling among the branches.
Like branches trembling with the birds they load.

Will time bring back to me what time has taken?
So I may see again, with fortune's decree aiding me in your midst?
God's help and justice still in you abide.
