    فمتى بعذب نمير قربك ينقع

    The agony of my longing is the fire of its burning thirst;

    so when will the sweet, pure water of your nearness quench it?

    Will time, do you think, grant a private moment with you,

    so I may confide my sufferings to you, and you listen?

    Why is the love-stricken man driven from your doors,

    when through you he seeks intercession with you for his wrongs?

    Is a hopeful seeker driven from the sanctuary of bounty,

    while his hopes look toward your compassion?

    O dwellers of al-ʿAlamayn in Siqt al-Liwa,

    how long shall separation's distance keep shaking me?

    So, by the anguish and passionate longing within me [opening uncertain]—

    may the hopeful always find a source of hope in you.

    واحسرتا وقع الذي أتوقع

    I had feared the coming of your departure;

    alas, what I dreaded has come to pass!

    The earth closed in on me when you forsook me,

    and my liver split apart—what am I to do?

    I have no recourse but tears; may what

    I have lost from you be restored through you.

    How I grieve for the hours of life already gone!

    Alas, if only regret could be of use!

    ولّى الشباب وما مضى لا يرجع

    O soul, melt away in grief and anguished longing;

    youth has fled, and what has passed does not return.

    أعلام مربعها خلاء يلقع

    So, with resolve, salvage what remains of yourself;

    the landmarks of its spring encampment stand empty and barren.

    Urge the riding camels toward the land of Tayba, for it is

    the land where the most exalted Prophet rests.

    How many lines of firm resolve my mind has penned,

    with fate's annulment inscribed between them!

    فاسكن فما لك في المقادر مدفع

    The Book has decreed beforehand all that will be;

    so be still, for you have no defense against fate's decrees.
