وقَلand scant is لهfor it التسليمthe greeting منfrom شيّقٍa yearning person مثليlike me
Peace upon the sands of the sanctuary, as many greetings as grains of sand.
Greetings to the sands of yearning, as many as the sands,
Yet greetings to it from one as yearning as I are too few.
And convey the greetings from a passionate lover like me.
وقفتI stood بهthere والعينand the eye تهمىstreams شؤومill-omened
بدمعwith tears حكىresembled فيin السحّthe pouring منسجمِstreaming الوبلheavy rain
I stood there, my ill-omened eye streaming
I stood there as my eyes filled with ill omens,
With tears whose torrent matched the pouring of heavy rain.
With tears that told a tale of interwoven sorrows.
خليليmy two dear friends كمhow much يشجرis pierced الفؤادthe heart بعذلهby reproaching it
ولاand no شيءthing أشجىmore grievous للفؤادto the heart منthan العذلreproach
My two friends, how the heart is pierced by reproach!
My beloved, how the heart is torn by his indifference!
And nothing is more grievous to the heart than reproach.
And nothing rends the heart more than indifference.
فماso what لكماfor you two والعذلand reproach فيin ندبlamenting دمنةan abandoned dwelling
كأنas though لمdid not يطلprolong ندبابهاlamentation over it أحدanyone قبلىbefore me
So why do you two reproach my lament over an abandoned dwelling?
Why this indifference that laments the loss of companionship
As though no one before me had long lamented over it.
As if no one has ever lamented its loss before me?
أينكرُis it condemned? سحthe pouring الدمعof tears والحزنand sorrow والأسىand anguish
لمنin one whose شوقهhis yearning شوقىmy yearning ومَنand one whose خبلُهhis madness خبلىmy madness
Is the torrent of tears, sorrow, and anguish to be condemned
Who would deny the shedding of tears, grief and anguish
In one whose yearning is like mine, and whose madness is like mine?
For one whose passion is my passion and whose madness is my madness?

Let me join my grief to the mourning of its doves.
Let me voice my agonies through the cooing of his doves,
Perhaps their kindred nature will one day heal the wasting pain of my bereavement.
Perhaps one day their image will heal the grief of my bereavement.

The doves' lament and song remind me
The cooing of the doves and their song remind me
Of happy hours that passed in union.
Of the blessed days of union that have passed.

I sway in rapture whenever al-Aqiq is mentioned.
I yearn whenever the anklets are mentioned,
So do not condemn my swaying whenever its name is mentioned.
Do not deny me, whatever is said, my inclination.

بإنجازwith the fulfillment of وعدa promise لاnot يكدرis clouded بالمطلby delay
When will the days, for once in this age, grant
When will the days allow, just once in this era,
The fulfillment of a promise unclouded by delay?
The fulfillment of a promise untainted by separation?

And will a time I knew at al-Musalla return,
And a covenant in the place of worship will renew
And gather my scattered life there after long separation?
Its pledge and reunite after long estrangement.

فمنthen who ليfor me بأنthat أحظىI may enjoy منfrom القربnearness بالنيلwith attainment
My endurance is indeed exhausted by distance and separation.
My patience has run out with distance and estrangement,
Who, then, will grant me the good fortune of attaining nearness?
Is there anyone who can help me attain the gifts of nearness?

ورقواand be tender لأشجانيtoward my sorrows ولاand do not تنكرواcondemn فعلىmy conduct
Leave me to my wailing, my dejection, and my burning grief.
Leave me be, my sighing, my gloom and my agony,
And pity my sorrows; do not condemn my conduct.
Have mercy on my sorrows, do not deny what I do.

And do not marvel at the rapture that has shown itself
Do not wonder at my displays of passion,
In me, for I have grown too weak to bear the burden.
For I have grown too weak to bear the pain.

Can a state be concealed whose garden's bough has withered,
I conceal the state of a garden whose branch has withered
And now, after its verdure, stands in drought?
And after vitality resides in oblivion.

ولمand did not أستبنI discern عنabout أيwhat عاقبةoutcome تجلىit will end
The war of separation has indeed kindled its fire.
The fires of separation have flared up in war,
And I have not discerned what its final outcome will be.
And I do not foresee what ending will reveal itself.

So I have begun consoling my soul for what has befallen me,
So I comfort my soul for what has befallen me,
Reflecting on those around me who weep over their sorrows.
Thinking of those who share my sorrows around me.
فإنthen if جادis generous ليto me باللطفwith kindness والعطفand compassion مالكيmy Master

If my Master bestows kindness and compassion on me,
If my master shows me kindness and compassion,
Then one like me will have need of none.
Then I will be like one who has no need of anyone.

And if it is otherwise—though pardon is hoped for—
And if forgiveness and mercy are hoped for,
Then what can be hoped for from wealth and family?
What then is hoped for from wealth and family?

So, O You whose blessings endure, shelter me from separation.
O Eternal Bestower of Bounty, save me from estrangement
And do not deny me the bounty I have known.
And do not deprive me of the grace I am accustomed to.

And forgive whoever has attended our gathering of remembrance,
Forgive those who have entered the gathering where we mention
For Ahmad's sake, the best of creation, the last of the messengers.
The Best of Creation, the Seal of the Messengers.

Do not banish them from Your gifts because of me.
