    O you who stand, grieved by the parting of one bidding farewell,

    This is separation—where, then, is the torrent of tears?

    God, what a terror-stricken heart there is in Iraq,

    Spending morning and evening in painful anguish!

    O separation, how often you deliberately sadden my heart,

    And melt my entrails and set my ribs ablaze!

    O you bidding farewell, have patience; perhaps He who has decreed

    Separation will decree reunion—so return.

    يا دهر بالأمر المقدر فاصدع

    O soul, submit to the separation allotted you;

    O Time, proclaim the ordained command!

    من ذا ليوم وداعهم لم يجزع

    Indeed, I was distraught at their parting when they bade farewell;

    Who was not distraught on the day of their farewell?

    Perhaps Time will revisit me and restore to me

    What we once knew in those dwelling places.

    So a greeting to the dwellings at al-ʿUdhayb,

    As long as an echoing plaint stirs one who yearns.

    Had your eyes beheld, on the day of their farewell,

    O friend, my yearning for the company and my collapse,

    You would have grieved at my grief over my yearning for them,

    And pitied me for my plight and my prolonged lamentation.
