O lightning, look upon the spring abode of al-Batha:

an abode for which my heart melts, and my ribs

bend around a flame of anguish.

Away from it, patience fails me; never am I seen

save with the fire of longing filling my innermost being.

There is no longing unless it sets the breast

    ablaze at daybreak and nightfall.

O you who ask me about the land of Tayba, it is indeed

a land where my affections have pitched their tents.

Urge the riding camels toward the haunts of its encampment,

and persevere in journeying by night and at evening.

And convey greetings to Muhassab from afar,

and be sure to proclaim my call among the tents.

And when you reach al-Aqiq, ask there

about a remedy for my ailments and a cure for my suffering.

Ah, if only I knew: will my burning thirst be cooled,

and my longing's blaze, by that water's coolness?

And when shall I call for the camel-drivers at the sanctuary,

with my soul already healed of anguish,

the abode near, and the great tree of union with them—

    its blossoms ripened through faithfulness?

The spring abode in Tayba is lovely; so alight,

and drink water there without a well-rope.

These are Ahmad's dwellings; there halt

the pale camels, worn thin by the exhausting journey.

In gratitude, kiss the tracks of their night journey, for

soreness has dyed their footpads with blood.

And truly, kissing their tracks is too little, since

in their steps lies a cure for ailments.

Why not, when the perfumed tomb has soil

to which their limbs have carried my limbs?

O land of Tayba, though the dwellings are far away,

may the downpour of every sky water you abundantly,

and may the east wind's breeze walk gently over you,

dewy with the fragrance of the luxuriant garden.
