هل في اللقاء على بعد المدى طمعُ
O Giza, they bade farewell, and the heart was torn apart.
O Giza, farewell, though my heart is torn,
Is there hope of reunion, despite the great distance?
Is there hope of meeting again across the distant horizon?

للَه ما أودعوا بالجزع إذ جزعوا
They departed, their inward parts filled with burning anguish.
They left, and their insides burned with sorrow,
God, what they left at the valley bend when they grieved!
By God, their grief was not feigned when they grieved,

Brimming cups of tears passed round among them,
Cups of tears passed around them,
Giving them draughts after those they had already swallowed.
Quenching them with sips after they had drunk deep,

They departed from Yathrib, and every riding camel
From Yathrib they travelled, and every traveller’s saddlebags
Bore a yearning that tore the inward parts apart.
Contained yearning that tore their insides,

They sighted true lightning from al-Khayf, and there billowed
They saw sincere lightning flash from the clouds,
At its parting clouds of tears that do not disperse.
Whose tears fell in streams that would not dry,

They loaded their burdens on the day they departed, and from
Every mountain pass, hopes rose toward them.
Every crease hopes emerged,

They bestowed upon them robes of wasting sickness;
In poverty they clothed them in robes,
God, what they bestowed when the dwelling grew distant!
By God, when they left that house nothing remained,

Why should they not regard wasting sickness on parting day as robes of honor,
Why did they not see those robes as gifts on the day of intent,
When robes from its radiance rest upon their shoulders?
And who draped them over their shoulders as gifts?

O land of Tayba, while hopes entice,
O blessed land, hopes still aspire,
Is there a springtime home for me in the courtyards of that abode?
Will those meadows again be my refuge?

Your exalted glory voiced humankind's hopes; they have
Its heights called to the hopes of mankind, and so
A meeting place with the dictated teachings in your assembly.
Hopes gathered in your valleys,

You clothed the days in your splendor, and they rejoiced,
You wore joy for days, and so rejoiced,
And piety, faith, and scrupulous devotion dwelt in you.
Piety, religion and devotion lived in you,

Alas for one far from home, downcast:
Alas for the grief of the distant abode,
Nothing of him remains to profit from time's changing fortunes.
No benefit remains for the turning of fate,

Time dealt unjustly with him in its judgment,
Time rules tyrannically over it
So he now gives ear to what befalls him, and listens.
So it listens to what befalls it and hears,

The dwellers of the sanctuary's valley, the bend, and Mina—
The dwellers of Wadi al-Hami, al-Munhai and Mina
I wonder, from afar, what they have done since his departure.
From afar cannot match what they once were,

Those dwelling places, though the journey to them is long—
Though singers still sing of those meadows,
My heart, despite their distance, is burning with thirst and torn apart.
My heart torn by distance still burns,
