وأسعدand I join in mourning فيin نياحتهits lamentation الهديلاthe cooing dove
I rub a humbled cheek in the dust,
I buried my cheek in the dust, humiliated,
And join the cooing dove in its lament.
While my lament brought joy to the night owl.
فخوفيfor my fear منof قطيعتكمyour estrangement برانيhas wasted me away
وأورثنيand has bequeathed me المذلةhumiliation والخمولاand obscurity
For my fear of your estrangement has wasted me away,
My fear of being cut off from you made me despondent,
And bequeathed me humiliation and obscurity.
And brought me disgrace and listlessness.
شفيعيmy intercessor عندكمbefore you ذلَthe humility of افتقاريmy need
وأنىand that I قدalready حللتI have lodged بكمwith you نزيلاas a guest
My intercessor before you is the humility of my need,
My poverty pleads for me before you,
And that I have lodged with you as a guest.
Though I have long been your guest.
أيقصىis he driven away? لائذٌone seeking refuge بكمin you معنىtormented
وكيفand how? وظلكمwhile your shade أضحىhas become ظليلاdeep and sheltering
Is a tormented man seeking refuge in you driven away?
Does an outcast seek refuge in you?
And how could he be, when your shade has grown so deep?
How can your shade shelter me when it has become so slight?

So be generous in granting nearness, and bring close
Be generous, draw me nearer,
One far away, who hopes for union with you.
So I, an outcast, may hope to reach you.
لئنif indeed أصبحتI have become محجوباًshut out فماthen nothing ليfor me

If I have become shut out, I have no recourse
If I awake excluded, what can I do
But to shed tears in torrents.
But shed copious, despairing tears?

When will he draw near your abode and reap
When will I approach your camp, and there reap
Acceptance in the garden of intimacy and nearness?
The fruits of intimacy and acceptance?
فواكبداهso, alas for my liver! منfrom نارthe fire of الأسىsorrow كمhow often

Alas for my liver! How often sorrow's fire
For so long, worries have stoked within me
Burns it and inflames it with searing anguish
Flames of sorrow that blaze and smolder.

Over the days of a lifetime that have passed away
Days of my life have passed,
And left deep-seated anguish in the heart.
Leaving lasting sorrow in my heart.
فهلso is there? منany مسعدa fellow mourner ليfor me فيin انتحابيmy sobbing
فيسعدنيso he weeps with me وأسعدهand I weep with him طويلاfor a long time
Is there anyone to join me in my sobbing,
Is there one blessed man who will choose me in my misery,
So he may weep with me, and I with him, at length?
And bring me joy, and find joy in me?

May breezes from the garden of generosity drift forth,
May the breeze from the garden of generosity blow over me
So breathing them may revive an ailing lover.
And revive this ailing youth.

Take the poor man by the hand, for he looks to
Take the hand of the poor man, for he hopes
None but you as a guide in his choosing.
Only in you, to guide him on his way.
