Gray hair inscribed letters on the surface of your temple;
The marks of white hair wrote on your cheek letters
From them the discerning man learned, seeking understanding.
By which the wise could recognize and comprehend

زفرات ملتهب الضلوع تلهفا
Youth deciphered their symbols, and there rose
When the codes of youth were unraveled, there arose
The sighs of one whose ribs were aflame, in anguish.
Sighs from a breast aflame, yearning intensely

After the line of white hair, let rebuke be
Eagerly awaiting the footfall of its calamities.
For the occurrence of steps of betrothal, eagerly

The fate of its beauty’s bloom is to be plucked.
Why should the fairness of its beauty be plucked?

And mourn what he wasted in days gone by

He who severs the paths of your life has drawn a sharpened blade.
That a terminator has asked the path of your life persistently

Asking brilliantly from your temples, you will find with it
Whatever you ask it, a harsh rebuker.
However much you ask of it, an impeding deterrent

You have loosed your soul’s rein into desire—woe to you!
You let your soul loose in passion
Rein it in: you have exhausted your steed enough.
Restrain it, for you have exhausted your eyes - enough!

How long, to what extent will you not take heed?
Stand in the abodes of His compassion, seeking compassion.
Stop in the resting places of its affection, pleading

If regretting might avail when you melt in regret

And sought intercession through the Chosen One for their offenses.

And exalted their standing with Him and made it radiant [reading uncertain].
And exalted their worth with Him, orienting them
