Bring back the nights of my anguish and suffering,

for sweet is the ardent lover’s life amid torment.

my grief for you, my sighing and my weeping?

How often the yearning lover is reproached in his affliction over you,

though reproach in affliction is itself encouragement.

    لا زال موقوفاً عليك رجائي

    Be gentle with me in my separation and ardent longing;

may my hope remain forever fixed on you.

So pity, through long estrangement and separation,

a cheek stained crimson with my blood for you.

If you truly grant me a gesture of kindness,

then the earth is mine, and the sky is mine.

And if my lifeblood pleases you, O my heart’s desire,

then my contentment shall lie in whatever pleases you.

In all matters I submit and surrender,

    content in prosperity and adversity.

O my Creator, be my deliverer from your punishment,

and pity my long stay in the lowliness of the grave.

Who will stand by me when I am left all alone in the earth,

and remain held in pledge until the day of my recompense?

Who will stand by me when I stand before you in

the assembly of recompense, while the people are in dire distress?

Who will stand by me when a scroll is unfurled before me,

    revealing the matters I concealed?

Who will stand by me when I am told, “O sinner,

    you always had so little shame in this world;

you have come to us with crimes exceeding

the pebbles and the grains of sand in number”?

O my refuge, you have bestowed upon your servant in this world

favor, and have never cut off your abundant giving.

So grant me uninterrupted favors always,

and hear the moan of my entreaty and my prayer.
