Sword edges and haughty eyes ward others off from them—

are they keen white blades, and keen black ones?

And yet the swiftest of them in slaying are cleaving swords,

whose polishers are their eyelids and kohl-sticks.

So no body is mortally struck save by cleaving swords,

and no heart is targeted save by gazing eyes.

Nor would the lightning-flashing, thundering storms be

of concern to me, but for the radiant, timid beauties.

And love is not what jealousy has barred me from,

    nor what blame and reproach have turned me away from;

but it is lamenting to the one I love,

even if rebuff and mighty warriors bar its way.

Can the garden of those charms be harvested,

or the pool of that kissed mouth be drunk from?

And will the shade of youth's first bloom return

to me, and reunion with loved ones be restored?

Love fortified within the shelter of fidelity,

and a pledge watered by the rains of longing.

And in love I am indeed weak of resolve,

though a furrow for tears lies in both my cheeks all night.

The white blades and spears swerve aside, fearing my blood,

and, as they bend aside, threats are deflected by it.

And hostile men relinquish their vengeance to me,

yet graceful wild cows lead me with their coquetry.

    فقلْ في مَضاءِ السيفِ والسيفُ مَغْمود

    And the gaze cuts into me, though the gaze is languid;

so speak of the sword's keenness while the sword is sheathed!
