    May God water, in al-Zawra’ on the western side,

    oryx does that came to the heart’s spring of life:

    ضعائف إِلاّ في مُغالبة الصَبّ

    chaste, save in drinking deep of passion;

    frail, save in overpowering the lovesick lover;

    كواعبُ لا تُعْطي الذِّمام على كَعْب

    noble women whom ʿUqayl son of ʿĀmir fears;

    budding-breasted maidens who grant Kaʿb no pledge of protection.

    When the desert women vie with them for an advantage

    in beauty, they liken face-veils to holes.

    I brought a grievance against their eyelids to separation,

    in folly—for can distance grant redress against nearness?

    And when farewell drew near, I said to my companion:

    Have mercy! Lead me away from gazing at the herd.

    If pupils are a kind of sword-edge,

    then there is no doubt that a glance is a kind of blow.

    Suppose I fell in love with separation in error,

    so I found myself in one ravine, my heart in another:

    why, then, when I call, 'O Patience, come to my aid,'

    am I forsaken, while my heart answers when anguish is invoked?

    فحتّامَ لا يصحو فؤاديَ مِنْ حُبِّ

    My lifetime has passed between parting and estrangement;

    how long, then, will my heart fail to sober from love?

    And I love the one before whom the full moon falls prostrate—

    do you not see the trace of dust upon its face?

    And the strangest thing in the wine of his eyes is that it

    doubles my drunkenness whenever it lessens my drinking.

    If, for me, there is no increase in love

    to be hoped for, what merit is there in visits at intervals?

    And my sickbed visitors kept asking, 'Who afflicts him?'

    and I kept it from them, until I asked them, 'Who afflicts me?'

    So now, whenever longing stirs me toward them,

    I refer my reproacher in love to my companions.
