Whoever ruled me would not be unjust in judgment.

And the coyness that came from

Beauty would be balanced against the passion on my part.

Enough for me—and for love's anguish—that I wrestle with it!

So, my reproacher, what have I to do with reproach?

How can the heart be cured of a sickness

That dates from the battle of the eyes?

Do not give me unmixed reproach to drink,

For my healing lies in the choicest wine of kisses.

Who ensnares the gazelle's gaze with flirtation.

Yet he has none of a drunkard's generosity.

He smiles while eyes are weeping,

And is carefree while hearts are preoccupied.

He glanced at me, upright as a slender branch,

And turned away, while my patience was unsteady.

And now, among mankind, love for him

Is like a dominion among dominions.

A beauty to which hearts have bowed

Willingly, as the heights of glory bowed to Ali.
