Every claim to courage not borne out

Every boast of bravery not supported

by the speech of wounds is an absurd claim.

By the testimony of speech is impossible

لا يَرُعْك الصِّقال في السيف حتى

لا يَرُعْك الصِّقال في السيف حتى

يَنطِق الفَلّ شاهداً للصِّقال

يَنطِق الفَلّ شاهداً للصِّقال

Let not the sword's polish awe you until

Don’t be deceived by the sword’s polish unless

its nicks speak, bearing witness to the polish.

The iron itself testifies to the polishing

لو تكون السهام تُحسِنُ قصداً

لو تكون السهام تُحسِنُ قصداً

عرّجتْ عن مقاصد الآمال

عرّجتْ عن مقاصد الآمال

Had arrows known how to aim aright,

If arrows could aim well on their own

they would have veered away from the objects of hope.

They would swerve from the goals of aspirations

غادر البأْسُ في جبينك منه

غادر البأْسُ في جبينك منه

أَثراً لاح في جبين الهلال

أَثراً لاح في جبين الهلال

Battle's fury left upon your brow its own

The rigor of war left its mark on your brow

mark, which shone upon the crescent's brow.

Gleaming like the crescent moon’s trace

لا يجلّي دُجى الحوادث إِلا

لا يجلّي دُجى الحوادث إِلا

غُررُ الحرب في وجوه الرّجال

غُررُ الحرب في وجوه الرّجال

Nothing dispels the darkness of calamities but

Only the sparks of war on the faces of men

the shining marks of war upon men's faces.

Can dispel the gloom of tribulations

في مقاديمها تُصاب المقا

في مقاديمها تُصاب المقا

ديمُ وتُرمى الأَكفال في الأَكفال

ديمُ وتُرمى الأَكفال في الأَكفال

In its vanguard are struck the val-

In the foreheads of horses, foreheads are struck
