فيin طاعةobedience to الحبlove ماwhat أَنفقتُI spent منof عُمريmy life
وفيand in سبيلthe cause of الهويpassion ماwhat شابَhas turned gray منof شَعَريmy hair
All I have spent of my life has been in love's service,
And all my hair that has grayed has done so in passion's cause.
طالhas lasted long الوُقوفthe standing علىat ضَحْضاحِthe shallows of نائلكمyour bounty
وغُلَّةand the burning thirst الصّدرof the breast بينbetween الوِردcoming to water والصَّدرِand departing from water
Long have I stood at the shallows of your bounty,
And my breast's burning thirst lingers between coming to water and leaving it.
كمhow often قدindeed أَماتَkilled الهوىpassion شوقيmy longing وأَنشرهand revived it
عنthrough يأْسdespair منتظِرٍone who waits أضوunclear; possibly 'or' وعدa promise منتظَرawaited
How often has passion slain my longing and revived it,
Through the despair of one who waits—or [reading uncertain] a promise awaited.
بمُهْجتيwith my lifeblood وبصَحْبيand with my companions كلُّevery آنسةٍlovely maiden
تبيتspends the night نافرةًshying away منّيfrom me ومِنْand from نَفَريmy band
I would ransom every lovely maiden with my lifeblood and my companions,
Who spends the night shying away from me and my band.
أَماdo you not ترىsee سُنَّةَcountenance الأَقمارof the moons مُشْرقةًshining
فيin لِمَّتيmy locks فبياضfor the whiteness الليلof the night للقمرbelongs to the moon
Do you not see the moons' countenance shining
In my locks? For the whiteness of night belongs to the moon.
هَبْنيsuppose I أُخلِّصُI free جسميmy body منfrom مُعَذِّبهits tormentor
فمنthen who يخلّصwill free قلبيmy heart منfrom يَدَيْthe two hands of نظريmy gaze
Suppose I free my body from its tormentor;
Then who will free my heart from the hands of my gaze?
فياso, O نسيمbreeze الخُزامىof lavender هُبَّblow ليfor me سَحَراًbefore dawn
لعلَّperhaps نَشْركyour fragrance مَطْوِيٌّfolded علىaround خَبَرtidings
So, O breeze of lavender, blow for me before dawn;
Perhaps your fragrance is folded around some tidings.
واحذرand beware لسانthe tongue دُموعيof my tears أَنْlest تَنِمَّbetray بهit
فإِنَّfor indeed سرّيَmy secret منfrom دمعيmy tears علىat خَطَرrisk
And beware the tongue of my tears, lest it betray my secret;
For my secret is at risk from my tears.
