علقتُI clung بحبلٍto a cord منamong حِبالthe cords of مُحمّدِMuhammad
Ah, gazelle of the frontier, will you sing to me:
“I have clung to one of Muhammad’s cords”?

And oh, is there in all time a night for that day
That might return—even barren, without a morrow?

So I might meet you there as you guide the wine-cup and sing,
And you suffice as its bearer and songster.

Ah, how lovely the one whose charms lie bare, unadorned,
Yet adorned and clad in the robes of loveliness.

Whenever hopes put me off with their promises,
I recalled a union with him, with no appointed tryst.

And my days with Maria—may God water her days
With what she has to meet the thirsting lover’s need.

And within that girdle is a figure of silver,
Whose cheeks gazing eyes stipple with gold.
وقدand indeed غلبhas prevailed المصباحُthe lamp فيهwithin it علىover الدُّجىthe darkness
سناthe gleam of قميرٍa little moon فيin جُنحthe gloom of ليلٍa night مجعّدِcurly
And the lamp within it has prevailed over darkness—
A little moon’s gleam in the gloom of a night of curls.

And whenever I shunned the bottle as a watering-place,
She gave me sweet saliva to drink in a rose-red vessel.

Ah me, what a face—like a church’s lamp,
Above it, the two temple-locks form a mosque’s prayer niche.

She has indeed made me a captive who seeks no ransom;
So speak of a captive who takes no joy in a ransomer.
