Ah, by a cup that reveals a mouth

smiling in pride with two roses of bashfulness,

both guarded by a sword whose cutting edges

are of the eyes’ dark rims, its watered sheen of their white and black—

I have indeed defied reproach for a young gazelle,

whom obedience to sight made master of my heart.

    His stature rivals bamboo

in suppleness and hue, to touch and sight.

A slender flank, and cool lips to sip from—

oh, my passion for the waist and the coolness,

and for one whose arrows kill outright without a hand,

upon bows that shoot without a string!

And how could keen-edged arrows miss hearts,

    fletched between decree and destiny?

Piercing, they make the gashes gush blood,

yet you see no trace of the wounds.

O you who keep me sleepless, granting union or shunning me,

    the lovesick lover is caught between two wakeful nights;

for the eye sees no difference between them

save in the length and brevity of sleeplessness.

    يا حبَّذا العذْلُ فيك من سَمَر

    No—reproach for loving you has become my nightly talk;

ah, how delightful is reproach for loving you as nightly talk!
