They looked toward your utmost reach, which none had attained,

So they knew for certain that eminence belongs to those who lead.

They sought eminence and strove, but you surpassed them,

And came to it by paths that had never been trodden.

They grew grey without catching even the dust; their lot

Was nothing but the dust of grey hair at the parting.

Through your brother or you shone the paths

Of eminence, and they smiled with a radiant lightning-flash.

Who will give eminence Muhammad and Ahmad,

So that it may glory in appearance and speech?

May the two brothers never be lost—each is a Farqad star,

But each is radiant in an eastern sky.

    ستضىء بالصبحين جبهة جلق

    And they both, as it shone, are united by eminence;

The brow of Jilliq will shine with the two dawns.

O Muhammad, both of you come from a great tree

That puts forth a branch deep-rooted in lofty deeds.

You made the love of glory beautiful, until it was sought

By every lover, and by those who had not loved.

    But fortunes varied: one lover

Was granted union, while another was not.

I do not reproach your enviers, for they

Await the occurrence of what was never created.

Weary is he who, on earth, has come to harbor

Against the two Farqad stars an enraged envier’s heart.

Do not fear them: Time, if you take vengeance on them,

Will take vengeance; and if you show gentle compassion, it will be gentle.

And when you find a ladder in providential care,

Then lengthen your strides, trust your Lord, and hover aloft.

And remain safe despite fortune’s tricks, blessed with success,

So that whoever opposes you remains without success.
