Illness has left your body, wherein a nation of virtue

    dwells, not hearts and bones.

What a body: it beads with dew, so virtue is inhaled,

and its pores praise it with pearls.

As though the pores were mouths of praise,

which the noble had filled with pearls before me.

Estrangement from one's peers is worse than estrangement from one's

family; in either, the noble man is wronged.

An estrangement like the nights, pregnant with fortune,

and my sighs from it are twins upon twins.

He did not chafe at it, though it was a guest; yet

many a guest makes his stay wearisome.

The notables sought you—even lofty virtues,

and abstractions, among which are ailments.

Then they departed, and there came the gift of

reward: vast blessings of health mirroring your bounty.

You build a pillar of virtue; everyone

seeks around it and requests dictation.

You have care and high resolve, and yours is

bounty; it is shameful for a magnanimous man not to care.

You are one for whom hearts languish when you fall

ill, and through whose recovery bodies are healed.

You gained healing's aid, so care fled,

and you made the pains follow it.

No one among humankind remains—praise be to

    God—ill, except languishing eyelids.
