After your departure, mine is the anguish of one stricken at heart,

    and a bereaved man's heart, and a grief-stricken man's tears.

We wished you to live, and that we might be

neighbors beneath your courtyard's spreading shade.

You severed ties with us, not after meeting and mutual affection,

and abandoned us, not out of hatred and aversion.

So I shall surely mourn you with tears, even if

a sorrowing man's tears for you avail nothing.

And I shall surely accompany the night after you, taking it as witness,

and show it how my fire-sticks strike fire.

And keep my eye, burning with love for you,

reserved for tears and sleepless vigil.

What snares the days set for you!

Then they ensnared you, mighty though you were.

And how often I wove around you, from the fabric of prayer,

armor to protect you—yet it proved ineffective.

Blessed is your radiant resting place, for it is

filled with a shaft of the midmorning sun.

My grief for a branch claimed by death,

    and a crescent of good fortune entombed in the earth;

and one soaring toward glory: before he reached it,

    glory itself cast him the key;

and an Indian-forged blade, scarcely drawn in pursuit of greatness,

before it was sheathed in a scabbard within the earth.

Away with sorrow's night-visitor, for it is

a guest that severs the thread of every vein.

It descends, and when it first descends, it does not turn back,

except with the central jewel of every peerless necklace.

O fortunate one, at whose departure the martyrs

have filled the open spaces of the wilderness.

The sun of good fortune has met you; do not stray

from the shade of the worshipped Creator's pardon.

The candles sputtered at your absence, and desolate became

those dwellings, emptied of their graceful gazelles.

I remember your Egypt as the Egypt of all beauty,

but today it is the Egypt of grief and lamentation.

None remains there of those whose crescent shines,

of those I knew, except the black nights.

You filled their hearts with ghada embers, so they seem

like saddles on the pale camels of guests and delegations.

O harshness of the days, or O estrangement of loved ones,

you two have tested the hardness of my wood.

You two led me to a watering place, and I turned away from

parting from a dear friend and the grievous loss of one beloved.

I kept drawing calamities as my lot, patiently,

until I faced them alone and my companions grew few.

If you two send calamities toward me, they are

like chainmail laid out before David.

Charge at me, both of you, for my patience is a keen sword,

    before which all iron blazes.

So may he who wrested life from al-Rida be watered

by a radiant cloud, bearing lightning and thunder,

whenever an eye weeps for the loss of its beloved,

or a camel-driver yearns for al-Naqa and Zarud.

And may patience give his father a brimming cup to drink,

mingled with the radiance of affirming God's oneness.
