1. تَضَمَّنتَ لِيَ الحاجَ

    ةَ مِن قَبلُ وَسارَعتا

    You undertook to fulfill my

    need beforehand, and hastened to it.

  2. وَقَد أَعطَيتَني عَهداً

    فَوَثَّقتَ وَوَكَّدتا

    And you had given me a pledge,

    then made it firm and reaffirmed it.

  3. وَقَرَّبتَ لِيَ الأَمرَ

    بِإِطماعٍ وَقَصَّرتا

    And you brought the matter within my reach,

    by raising my hopes, but fell short.

  4. وَمَوَّتَّ لِيَ الجَدَّ

    فَأَتقَنتَ وَأَحكَمتا

    And you killed my good fortune,

    doing so expertly and thoroughly.

  5. وَأَطلَعتُ لَكَ الوُدَّ

    بِشَيءٍ فَتَغَضَّبتا

    And I revealed my affection to you

    through something, and you grew angry.

  6. فَقُلتُ الحَظُّ في ذاكَ

    وَتُبتُ فَأَنكَرتا

    So I said, 'Good fortune lies in that,'

    and repented, but you disapproved.

  7. فَما ضَمَّكَ مِضمارٌ

    إِلى الجَريِ فَوَقَّفتا

    So no racecourse drew you

    into running, and you stopped.

  8. وَقَد كَلَّفَكَ الشَيءَ

    وَقَد كُنتَ تَعَوَّدتا

    And you had been charged with the task,

    and you had been accustomed to it.

  9. وَما زِلتَ قَديماً فَ

    رَساً فيهِ فَفَرزَنتا

    And you had long been

    a knight at it, then became a chess vizier.

  10. فَأَنتَ الآنَ تَلقاني

    بِلا شَيءٍ كَما كُنتا

    So now you meet me

    with nothing, just as you were before.

  11. فَإِن صادَفتَ مِنّي غَف

    لَةً عَنكَ تَغافَلتا

    So if you found me

    heedless of you, you feigned heedlessness.

  12. وَفي الأَيّامِ إِن سُوّي

    تَ زَوَّدتُ وَزَوَّدتا

    And on some days, if you were

    treated equally, I supplied provisions, and so did you.

  13. وَقَد كُنتَ إِذا جاءَ

    رَسولُ الشُربِ بَكَّرتا

    And formerly, whenever there came

    the drinking party's messenger, you arrived early.

  14. فَقَد صِرتَ إِذا ما جِئ

    تُ في الأَيّامِ حَجَّرتا

    But now you have come to this: whenever

    I come on some day, you hold back,

  15. لَتَلقى عِندِيَ الجَمعَ

    إِذا أَنتَ تَأَخَّرتا

    so as to find the company at my house

    when you arrive late.

  16. فَلا أَسأَلُ عَمّا قي

    لَ في الأَمرِ وَما قُلتا

    So I do not ask about what

    was said of the matter, or what you said.

  17. وَإِن أَومَأتُ بِالشَيءِ

    وَما يَخفى تَكاتَمتا

    And if I hint at the matter,

    though it is no secret, you keep it concealed.

  18. وَجَدَّدتَ إِلَيَّ اللَح

    ظَ خَوفاً وَتَلَفَّتّا

    And you cast toward me another

    glance in fear, and looked about.

  19. فَإِن أَيقَنتَ بِالشُربِ

    وَما يَحويهِ عَربَدتا

    But if you became certain of the drinking

    and what it held, you grew drunkenly abusive.

  20. فَهَذا مِن خَطاياكَ

    وَإِن شِئتَ لَأَحسَنتا

    This is among your misdeeds,

    though, if you wished, you could have done well.

  21. وَلَو شِئتَ لَقَد صِرتا

    إِلى حَظٍّ وَقَصَّرتا

    And had you wished, you would have come

    to good fortune, but you fell short.

  22. وَقَد كُنتَ تَحَرَّدتا

    وَلَكِنَّكَ بَرزَنتا

    You had indeed set your mind to it,

    but you became a nag [uncertain reading].

  23. كَأَنّي بِكَ قَد قُلتا

    وَأَطنَبتَ وَأَكثَرتا

    It is as though I see you: you have spoken,

    and spoken at length and said much,

  24. وَهَوَّنتَ وَعَظَّمتا

    وَأَسرَفتَ وَأَفرَطتا

    and belittled and magnified,

    and been excessive and gone too far,

  25. وَقَرَّبتَ وَبَعَّدتا

    وَطَوَّلتَ وَعَرَّضتا

    and brought near and put far away,

    and lengthened and broadened,

  26. وَوَلَّيتَ وَأَقبَلتا

    وَقَدَّمتَ وَأَخَّرتا

    and turned away and come forward,

    and put first and put last.

  27. فَدَع عَقلَكَ في هَذا

    فَبِالعَقلِ تَبَرَّعتا

    So leave your reason alone in this,

    for you have freely given your reason away.
