أَتَتنِيَreached me دِجلَةُthe Tigris فيماamong what أَتَتshe reached
فَماfor … not يَصنَعُdoes البَحرُthe sea ماwhat تَصنَعُshe does
The Tigris reached me among all she reached;
The Tigris came to me as it came
For the sea does not do what she does.
What can the sea do that you can do?
فَكَمso how many مِنof جِدارٍa wall لَناof ours مائِلٍleaning
وَآخَرَand another يَسجُدُprostrates أَوor يَركَعُbows
So how many a wall of ours is leaning,
How many walls do we have leaning
And another prostrates or bows!
And others bow or kneel
وَيُمطِرُناand rains on us السَقفُthe roof مِنfrom بَينِناour midst
وَمِنand from تَحتِناbeneath us أَعيُنٌsprings تَنبُعُwell up
And the roof rains on us from our midst,
The ceiling rains on us between us
And from beneath us springs well up.
And beneath us eyes well up
وَأَصبَحَand became بُستانُناour garden جَوبَةًa hollow
يُسَبِّحُpraises God فيin مائِهاits water الضِفدَعُthe frog
And our garden has become a hollow,
Our orchard has become marshes
In whose water the frog praises God.
Where frogs praise in its waters
