Tell me, O care of my longing and my soul,
Tell me, O my worries, ask my soul
Who afflicted me in love, or who informed against me?
Who seduced me into love or backbit against me
لاno وَمَنby Him who قَدَّرَordained الشَقاءَmisery عَلىupon العُشthe lov- (start of 'lovers')

No—by Him who ordained misery for the lov-
No, who decreed misfortune upon affection
ers, I have not been unfaithful a single hour, by my reckoning.
My passion, I have never been unfaithful in my devotion
لَيتَwould that أَنَّthat الرَسولَthe messenger كانَwere يُؤَدّيconveying
لَحظَthe glance of عَينيmy eye كَماas يُؤَدّيhe conveys كِتابيmy letter
Would that the messenger would convey
I wish the messenger could convey
My eye's glance, as he conveys my letter!
A glance from my eyes as he conveys my message
فَأَرىthen I would see شَرَّthe evil of كُلِّevery يَومٍday وَيُشفىand would be healed
سُقمُthe sickness of نَفسيmy soul وَحَسرَتيand my sorrow وَاِكتِئابيand my melancholy
Then I would see each day's evil, and healed would be
So I may see the evil of each day and it may cure
My soul's sickness, my sorrow, and my melancholy.
The sickness of my soul, my grief, and my depression
