Rise, my drinking companion; let us drink our morning wine in darkness.

Dawn is almost breaking—or has already broken.

And I see the Pleiades in the sky, as though they were

a foot peeping out of mourning robes.

Then my companion answered me with her right hand, and I filled it

with a glass flask like a blazing star.

O friend, let no hour of heedlessness cheat you

of pleasure or reflection on the hereafter.

And drink while the season is pleasant, for already

September's swiftest camel-driver has driven summer away.

And at night it gave us a whiff of its cool breeze,

and spirits found ease within their bodies.

It came to you with dew ahead of the rain,

so the earth stands ready for the rains.

How many a meadow lies in its soil's hidden depths,

along a watercourse or in a valley's hollow,

appearing when the season brings a drop of rain,

as though the two had arranged to meet.
