Rise, my companion; let us go at dawn against the host of wild beasts,

    with trained hunters—speckled hawks,

as though an embroiderer had dotted them—

and lean hunting hounds sniffing the air,

and a downpour of speed, no mere drizzle.

They never claimed even a scratch to our exclusion

upon their quarry, though mighty in their grip.

So he rose toward them, his face beaming

    like a newly struck dinar,

and traded soft bedding for the saddle

when he saw dawn walking through the night.

And how many lairs and nests lay empty!

    And wine, undiluted, without adulteration,

that throws sorrow's lock wide open—

I drank it beneath dew and drizzle,

on a night of bleary-eyed stars.
