O Time, O companion of calamities,

every day you do harm again and again.

O Time, indeed, the people who were carried far away

by separation have multiplied my afflictions.

After they were gone, I forbade my hand's movement

to my mouth to drink from cups,

and being seen smiling at anyone

except with a heart full of sorrows.

Time's vicissitudes have never ceased dividing us

    between joys and sorrows.

Why, whenever I say I have found

brothers in whom I see affection,

does a calamity scatter them and leave me alone

apart from them, longing for my glances?

O my heart's wholeness for mirth after them—

until I see them—that is my appointed time.

Perhaps I may hope that their end can be reversed—

but how? There is no way with the dead.

    فَصِرتُ أَبكي أَهلَ المُروءاتِ

    I once wept for people of affection;

now I weep for people of noble character.

    أَثكَلَنيها رَبُّ السَماواتِ

    I was left among the worst band ever created;

may the Lord of the heavens bereave me of them!

Dogs of the settlement when I am present; but if

I am gone for an instant, lions of the forests.

If entrusted with a secret, they betray it, and never

turn their gaze away from wrongdoing.

And if you wish your honor violated, then turn

them away; their needs will excuse them.

They meet the poor with scowls, and the man of

wealth with 'At your service!' and greetings.

So they are for greetings, not for warding off calamity

on a day of need for affection.

Each is a burden on whoever seeks to help them,

yet they commit wrongs against him.
