بَنيO sons of عَمِّناour paternal uncle الأَدنَينِthe nearest مِنfrom آلِthe house of طالِبٍTalib
تَعالَواcome إِلىto الأَدنىwhat is nearer وَعودواand return إِلىto الحُسنىwhat is best
O our nearest cousins, of the house of Talib,
Come to what is nearer, and return to what is best.
أَلَيسَare not بَنوthe sons of العَبّاسِal-Abbas صِنوَclose kin of أَبيكُمُyour father
وَمَوضِعَand the repository of نَجواهُhis confidences وَصاحِبَهُand his companion الأَدنىthe closest
Are not the sons of al-Abbas your father's own kin,
The keepers of his confidences and his closest companions?
وَأَعطاكُمُand gave you المَأمونُal-Ma'mun عَهدَa pledge of succession خِلافَةٍa caliphate
لَناto us حَقُّهاthe right to it لَكِنَّهُbut he جادَgave generously بِالدُنياwith the world
And al-Ma'mun pledged you succession to the caliphate,
Ours by right—yet he freely gave away the world,
لِيُعلِمَكُمto teach you أَنَّthat الَّتيthat which قَدalready حَرَصتُمُyou were eager
عَلَيهاfor it وَغودِرتُمand you were left عَلىon أَثرِهاits trail صَرعىslain
To show you that what you had so eagerly yearned
For—and in whose pursuit you were left slain—
يَسيرٌeasy عَلَيهِfor him فَقدُهاits loss غَيرُnot مُكثِرٍmaking much of it
كَماas يَنبَغيis fitting لِلصالِحينَfor the righteous ذَويpossessors of التَقوىpiety
Is easy for him to lose, without making much of it,
As befits the righteous, those possessed of piety.
فَماتَthen died الرِضىal-Rida مِنfrom بَعدِafter ماwhat قَدalready عَلِمتُمُyou knew
وَلاand … (start of 'sought refuge') ذَت… (end of 'sought refuge') بِناwith us مِنfrom بَعدِهِafter him مَرَّةًa time أُخرىanother
Then al-Rida died, after what you already know,
And after him it sought refuge with us once more.
وَعادَتand it returned إِلَيناto us مِثلَlike ماas عادَreturned عاشِقٌa lover
إِلىto وَطَنٍa homeland فيهِin it لَهُfor him كُلُّall ماthat يَهوىhe desires
And it returned to us as a lover returns
To a homeland where he has all that he desires.
دَعَوناleave us وَدُنياناand our world الَّتيwhich كَلِفَتbecame enamored بِناof us
كَماjust as قَدalready تَرَكناكُمwe have left you وَدُنياكُمُand your world الأولىthe former
Leave us and our world, which is enamored of us,
Just as we have left you and your former world.
