O one who steals glances at me,
O you who steals surreptitious glances at me,
And flees whenever I look at him.
Yet when I look at you, you turn and flee,

نِكَ عِندَنا لا تَستَقِر
Why do I see the glances of your eye
Why do I see your shy eyes dart about,
Never settling in our presence?
Never lingering here with me?

If you are miserly with speech,
If words you spare, begrudging speech,
Then at least grant me a glance.
At least let your eyes linger within my reach,

عِنديI have مِنَof الحُبُّlove الخَبَرthe tidings
عِندي مِنَ الحُبُّ الخَبَر
My body says through its sickness:
My frail body confesses with its sickness,
“I have tidings of love.”
I am love's wounded wreck on the beach.
