ياO لَيلَةًnight بِتُّI spent the night فيهاin it دائِمَconstant السَهرِwakefulness
أَرعىI watch النُجومَthe stars حَليفَcompanion of الهَمِّsorrow وَالفِكرِand thought
O night in which I remained ceaselessly awake,
O night in which sleeplessness prevails
Watching the stars, companion to sorrow and thought.
I tend the stars, companion of worries and thoughts
كَأَنَّهاas though they حينَwhen ذَرَّscattered اللَيلُthe night ظُلمَتَهُits darkness
جَمرٌembers جَلَتهُlaid them bare الصَباthe east wind فيin مُصطَلىًa hearth خَضِرِgreen
As though they, when night scattered its darkness,
As if when the night spread its darkness
Were embers the east wind laid bare in a green hearth.
Embers stirred by the breeze in a green fireplace
ياO وَيحَwoe to قَلبِيَmy heart مِنbecause of ريمٍa gazelle بُليتُI have been afflicted بِهِwith him
بِالصُبحِwith dawn مُنتَقِبٍveiled بِاللَيلِwith night مُعتَجِرِturbaned
Ah, woe to my heart for a gazelle with whom I am afflicted,
Oh my heart, what misery I have suffered
Veiled in dawn, turbaned in night.
Awakening at dawn, blanketed in night
