يا إِمامَ الهُدى وَيا أَحكَمَ النا

سِ بِعَدلٍ في العَفوِ أَو في العِقابِ

O Imam of true guidance, O wisest of all peo—

O imam of guidance, O wisest of men,

—ple, just whether pardoning or punishing;

just in pardon or in punishment;

يا مُعيداً لِلمُلكِ يا مَلجَأً لِل

يا مُعيداً لِلمُلكِ يا مَلجَأً لِل

أُسدِ حَتّى بَصبَصنَ بِالأَذنابِ

O restorer of the realm, O refuge for the—

O restorer of kingship, O refuge for the

—lions, until they wagged their tails;

إِنَّ رَأياً أَراكَ تَقديمَ بَدرٍ

لَعَجيبٌ مُوَفَّقٌ لِلصَوابِ

Indeed, the judgment that led you to advance Badr

Indeed, the judgment that led you to give Badr precedence

is wondrous, unerringly guided to the right.

ما رَأَينا لِلمَلكِ أَنصَحُ مِنهُ

ما رَأَينا لِلمَلكِ أَنصَحُ مِنهُ

أَينَ ذا مِن أولَئِكَ الأَصحابُ

أَينَ ذا مِن أولَئِكَ الأَصحابُ

We have seen no one more faithful in counsel to the king than he;

We have seen no one more loyal to the king than he;

تابِعٌ ما نُحِبُّ في كُلِّ شَيءٍ

وَلِما لا نُحِبُّهُ ذو اِجتِنابِ

He follows whatever we love in everything,

He follows what we love in everything,

and shuns whatever we do not love.

مُؤنِسٌ يَومَ لَذَّةٍ وَنَديمٌ

مُؤنِسٌ يَومَ لَذَّةٍ وَنَديمٌ

وَهوَ في حَومَةِ الوَغى لَيثُ غابِ

وَهوَ في حَومَةِ الوَغى لَيثُ غابِ

A cheering companion on a day of pleasure, a boon companion,

A pleasant companion on a day of pleasure, and a boon companion,

yet in the thick of battle, a lion of the jungle.

ما أَتى ما كَرَهتَ قَطُّ وَلا أَذ

نَبَ ذَنباً مُستَأهِلاً لِلعِقابِ

نَبَ ذَنباً مُستَأهِلاً لِلعِقابِ

Never did he do what you disliked, nor ever com—

He never did what you disliked, nor committed

هُوَ خُلقٌ كَما أَرَدتَ وَحَظٌّ

He is of the very character you desired, and a boon
