قَرعُ الكُؤوسِ بِأَفواهِ القَوازيزِ
O friend, my hearing is diverted from its reproachers
O my companion, your cup's clink distracts my hearing from her reproaches,
By cups clinking against the mouths of glass bottles.
As you pour wine into cups with mouths of ewers.

He tilted his ewer beneath its tap,
He bent his pitcher under her abode,
Until it filled from the innards of a pierced vessel.
Until it was filled from the heart of fermented grapes.

The fresh daisies in his mouth exchange smiles with
Laughing coquettishly, the tender apple in his mouth,
A cheek's apple, studded with a mole of musk.
With a cheek beauty-marked by musk.

As though brocade upon his face had spread
As if he had spread out brocade on his face,
An embroidered pattern he urged into beautiful needlework.
An embroidery whose beauty was exquisitely wrought.

في مِهرَجانٍ نُغاديهِ وَنَيروزِ
So through him, and throughout his days, we are always
We are with him, and in his days forever,
At a Mihragan we greet each morning, and a Nowruz.
Celebrating in a festival, joyous and glad.

يَعُبُّ مِن ذَهَبٍ قَد ذابَ إِبريزِ
For among the youths, a joyous one is always
For he remains, of the youths, possessed of rapture,
Drinking deeply of gold that has melted—pure gold.
Melting gold that had flowed molten from a crucible.

The sun's noonday heat persisted upon it, smelting it,
The sun's heat poured on him, refining him,
And separated out its pure essence—how thoroughly!
Distinguishing the pure gold, however it be purified.

It contends with water in the goblets when mixed,
It contends with water in cups when mixed
With a keen, brandished blade from the swords of sleep.
With a sword of drowsiness, tottering.

Whenever he seeks to bolt, while it draws him in,
Whenever it desires tempestuousness, while she restrains him,
Can he muster any weapon but racing ahead?
Can he wield any weapon but severance?

Doubt does not hold back my resolve when it rises,
Doubt does not keep my resolve seated when he rises,
Nor is my head barred from firm judgment.
Nor is my head bound from resoluteness.
