ياO دارُdwelling أَينَwhere ظِباؤُكِyour gazelles اللُعسُdark-lipped
قَدonce كانَthere was ليfor me فيamong إِنسِهاits people أُنسُcompanionship
O dwelling, where are your dark-lipped gazelles?
O house, where are your friendly owls
Once I found companionship among its people.
Whose company I found so sweet
أَينَwhere البُدورُthe full moons عَلىupon غُصونِbranches نَقاa sand dune
مِنfrom تَحتِهِنَّbeneath them خَلاخِلٌanklets خُرسُsilent
Where are the full moons upon the branches of a sand dune,
Where are the buds on the branches of the nabk tree
With silent anklets beneath them?
Underneath them turtle-doves softly cooing
وَمُراسِلٌand a correspondent فيهِمamong them يُجيبُanswers وَقَدwhile already

And among them a correspondent who answers, while
And the carrier pigeons answering them
My soul has yearned for his rendezvous.
As their hearts yearn for their promised meeting
وَكَأَنَّماand as though يَسخوgives generously بِضَمَّتِهِwith his embrace

And it is as though his embrace were freely bestowed by
Like a bough kindled by the sun
A branch above which the sun blazes.
Glowing at its touch

Blood on the two loincloths has gladdened me;
The blood of the two civets brought me joy
By God, I swear that it is filth.
By God I swear it is an abomination
ياO عامِرَfrequenter of الخَلَواتِsecluded places كَيفَhow تَرىyou think
لَوif يَستَطيعُit could يَمُجُّكَit spits you out الرِمسُthe grave
O frequenter of secluded places, what do you think?
O dweller of ruins, how do you see
The grave would spit you out if it could.
If paralysis could seize and shake you
لِلَّهِto God belongs دَرُّexcellence (literally, milk) فَتىa young man يُعَمِّرُهُfills it
لاmay not مَسَّهُafflict him شَلَلٌparalysis وَلاnor نَفسُthe evil eye
God bless the youth who fills it;
Praiseworthy is the youth who restores them
May neither paralysis nor the evil eye afflict him.
Untouched by inertia or lassitude
ماnot إِنat all (emphatic) بِمَصرَin Egypt لِأَهلِهاfor its people نَشَبٌproperty
إِلّاexcept وَفيهِand in it عَلَيهُمُupon them لَبسُconfusion
There is no property in Egypt belonging to its people
In Egypt there is no trouble for its people
Without confusion for them over it.
Without clashing and confusion added to it
فيin كُلِّevery يَومٍday ذَرُّrising شارِقَةٍa rising sun
فيin غَرسِthe plantings of بَعضِهِمُsome of them لَهُfor him غَرسُa planting
Each day, at sunrise,
Each day the glitter of drawn swords
He has a planting among the plantings of some of them.
In the orchards of some of them has its thrusts
فَشِعارُهُمso their watchword بِاللَيلِat night بَينَهُمُamong them
دَبٌّcreeping دَبيبَthe creeping of النَملِthe ants إِذwhen يَعسوit scurries about
So their watchword among themselves at night is:
Their night signal amongst themselves
Creeping like ants as they scurry about.
Is the creeping of ants when they rest

He never parts with his rod,
Never leaving his abode
Joyful as a one-eyed man confined in prison.
Is a one-eyed prisoner enchained by sorrows
ياO أَهلَpeople of مَصرَEgypt قُرونَكُمyour horns سَقَطَتhave fallen

O people of Egypt, your horns have fallen
O people of Egypt, your fortunes have fallen
After him—so your heads are smooth.
After them, your heads are shaven bare
