أَعاذِلَO censurer قَدindeed أَبَحتُI have given over اللَهوَpleasure ماليmy wealth
وَهانَand has grown insignificant عَلَيَّto me مَأثورُhanded-down المَقالِsayings
O censurer, I have given my wealth over to pleasure,
and time-honored sayings mean little to me.

فَمالَكِfor you have no حيلَةٌremedy فيهِfor it وَلاnor ليfor me
Leave me; such is my nature—leave me.
For you have no remedy for it, nor have I.

And many a dove-gray day, letting loose
its rain-spouts in drizzle and downpour,

I gained its joy and spent the day
carefree, despite the reproaching women.
وَساقَand a cupbearer يَجعَلُhe places المِنديلَthe napkin مِنهُon his person
مَكانَin place of حَمائِلِthe baldrics السَيفِof the sword الطِوالِlong

And a cupbearer who slings his napkin
in place of the long sword-belts—

the fine veil of his cheek was dyed with roses,
and his temple-lock's nūn was dotted with a mole—

like a piebald steed with its horsecloths cast off,

with a glass cup holding lions,
whose prey are the minds of men.

Whenever it felled a drinking companion among us,
he took his right hand and his left for pillows.

خَلِيٍّfree of love لاnot يَرِقُّhe feels pity وَلاand not يُباليhe cares
Have you not seen me plagued by a coy beloved,
untouched by love, who neither pities nor cares?
أَقولُI say وَقَدand already أَخَذتُI took الكَأسَthe cup مِنهُfrom him

I say, having taken the cup from him:
May the mistresses of beauty shield you from harm!
