Now the gazelle's eye has gladdened my heart,

and he swayed like a branch, bending and straightening.

Now he whispered to his lover with love's secret prompting,

and hastened his glance in affection and greeting.

Indeed, I spent the night kissing him, with night our guardian,

until dawn appeared, its foreparts white.

And the herald of night's death rose atop the wall, as

a chanter on a lookout cried out for arbitration.

And a cloud seizes the full moon and lets it go,

as though it were unveiling a face that had been slapped.

So imagine what you will, while a reveler's needs

are fulfilled and no request is denied.

O night of union—if only dawn would forsake her!

O night of union, endure like this—endure!

Our pitchers spent the night with red headbands,

where cupbearers cried 'God is great!' and offered reverence.

So throughout our night we kept being served water-mixed wine,

as though the water urged it to split apart.

As though in its cup, while water overtops it,

were ants' legs or the engraving of rings.

May no hand befriend me that has not enriched a thousand hands,

and has not brought spears back with crimson nostrils.

Hasten with your generosity—hasten before some hindrance,

for, to me, a young man's promise is grounds for reproach.
