خَليلَيَّmy two friends قَدindeed طابَhas become delightful الشَرابُthe wine المُبَرَّدُchilled
وَقَدand indeed عُدتُI returned بَعدَafter الشَكِّthe doubt وَالعودُand returning أَحمَدُmore praiseworthy
My two friends, the chilled wine has become delightful.
My friend, the chilled wine is good,
And I have returned after doubt; returning is more praiseworthy.
And I have returned, after doubt and absence, Ahmad.
فَهاتاso bring, you two عُقاراًwine فيin قَميصِa shirt زُجاجَةٍa glass bottle
كَياقوتَةٍlike a ruby فيin دُرَّةٍa pearl تَتَوَقَّدُglows
So bring, you two, wine wearing a glass bottle as a shirt,
So bring me a potion in a glass flask,
Like a ruby glowing within a pearl.
Like a ruby in a pearl that glows.
يَصوغُfashions عَليهاover it الماءُthe water شُبّاكَa lattice فِضَّةٍsilver

The water fashions over it a lattice of silver;
The water fashions around it a net of silver,
It has white rings that loosen and are knotted.
With a white necklace that dissolves and coagulates.
وَغَنّىand sang لَناfor us فيin جَوفِهاits interior حَبَشِيَّةٌan Abyssinian woman
عَلَيهاupon her سَراويلٌtrousers مِنَof الماءِthe water مُجسَدُdyed red
And an Abyssinian woman sang for us within it,
And it sings for us in its interior a Habashiyya song,
Wearing red-dyed trousers made of water.
Wearing trousers of water embodied.
فَظاهِرُهاso its exterior حِلمٌforbearance صَبورٌpatient عَلىunder الأَذىharm
وَباطِنُهاand its interior جَهلٌfolly يَقومُrises وَيَقعُدُand sits down
So its exterior is forbearance, patient under harm;
Its appearance is forbearing patience from harm
And its interior is folly that rises and sits down.
And its interior is ignorance that rises and sits.
وَلَمّاand when جَنَيناهاwe gathered it قِطافاًpicked bunches رَويَّةًjuicy

And when we gathered it in juicy bunches,
And when we pluck it as ripe bunches,
It would melt when the hand touched its clusters.
It melts when its clusters touch the hand.
