Much given to sleep, much envied despite his foes’ fury;
Bitterly grieving the spite of enemies,
his thoughts soar to the loftiest heights of glory.
His thoughts aspire to the heights of glory.

If ever the envious want anything from a man,
When enviers seek to harm a man,
his character and noble deeds lend them distinction.
His virtues and achievements adorn them.

When he grows wealthy, he finds his way to their poverty,
If he becomes self-sufficient, he finds guidance in their need;
yet his rival in poverty never finds his way to him.
Yet the needy are not guided to him.

تَأَمَّل رُوَيداً لَستَ مِمَن أُحاذِرُه
And O my detractor, whose heart is filled with faults,
O you who find fault while fault fills your heart,
reflect at leisure: you are not among those I fear.
Consider awhile - you are not one I fear.
وَكُنتَand you were كَرامٍlike one throwing at كَوكَباًa star بِبِصاقِهِwith his spit
وَكُنتَ كَرامٍ كَوكَباً بِبِصاقِهِ
فَرُدَّso was turned back عَلَيهِupon him وَبلُهُhis downpour وَمَواطِرُهand his showers
فَرُدَّ عَلَيهِ وَبلُهُ وَمَواطِرُه
And you were like one pelting a star with his spit,
You were honored like a star in its rising,
so his downpour and showers were turned back upon him.
But it declined on you, soaked you in its showers.
