May al-Matira, with its shade and trees, be watered,

And the monastery of ʿAbdun, by a downpour of rain.

For often there I was roused for morning wine,

At dawn's first light, while the sparrow had not yet flown,

By the voices of monastery monks at their prayers,

    Black-robed, crying aloud before dawn,

Girdled about their waists, they had placed

Upon their heads wreaths of hair.

How many a fair-faced man among them, his eyes kohled

With magic, closes his lids over eyes of brilliant white and black!

I gazed at him with desire until he yielded to it,

Willingly, and promised me a tryst with a glance.

And he came to me, concealed in the shirt of night,

Hastening his steps out of fear and caution.

So I rose, spreading my cheeks upon the road for him,

In submission, and trailing my hems along his tracks.

And the light of a crescent appeared, almost exposing us,

Like a clipping that had been cut from a fingernail.

Then what happened happened—what I will not recount.

So assume the best, and do not ask what happened.
