قَيَّدَنيbound me الحُبُّlove وَخَلّاهاand set her free
قَيَّدَني الحُبُّ وَخَلّاها
وَلَجَّand persisted بيin me سُقمٌsickness وَعافاهاand spared her
وَلَجَّ بي سُقمٌ وَعافاها
Love bound me and set her free.
Love has enchained me, while it let her go,
And sickness clung to me, yet spared her.
Sickness afflicts me, while it grants her health.
كِدتُI almost أَقولُsay البَدرُthe full moon شِبهٌa likeness لَهاof her
كِدتُ أَقولُ البَدرُ شِبهٌ لَها
أَجعَلُهاI liken her كَالبَدرِto the full moon حاشاهاfar be it from her
أَجعَلُها كَالبَدرِ حاشاها
I almost said, “The full moon is her likeness.”
I was about to say the full moon resembles her,
Would I liken her to the full moon? Never!
But I dare not compare her to the radiant moon.
