حَفَرتُهاI dug it جَوفاءَhollow مَنقورَةًscooped out
حَفَرتُها جَوفاءَ مَنقورَةً
فيin دَمِثٍsoft ground سَهلٍlevel وَطيءَyielding underfoot التُرابthe soil
في دَمِثٍ سَهلٍ وَطيءَ التُراب
Its pit is hollow, hewn out,
I dug it, hollow and scooped out,
within a smooth armlet of soft, yielding earth.

تَضمَنُit guarantees رَيَّquenching the thirst of الجَيشِthe army لِلمُستَقيfor the water-drawer
تَضمَنُ رَيَّ الجَيشِ لِلمُستَقي
كَأَنَّas though دَلوَيهِhis two buckets جَناحاthe two wings of عُقابan eagle
كَأَنَّ دَلوَيهِ جَناحا عُقاب
It holds an army’s ample supply for whoever draws water,
It guarantees the water-drawer enough water to quench the army's thirst,
as though his two buckets were an eagle’s wings.
