صَدَدتُI turned away وَإِنand though صَدَدتُI turned away بِرُغمِin spite of أَنفيmy nose
فَكَمfor how many فيin الصَدِّturning away مِنof نَظَرٍa glance إِلَيكاtoward you
I turned away, though I did so against my will.
For how many glances toward you there are in turning away!
أَراكَI see you بِعَينِwith an eye of قَلبٍa heart لاnot تَراهاsee it
عُيونُthe eyes of الناسِpeople مِنout of حَذَرٍconcern عَلَيكاfor you
I see you with an eye of the heart, unseen
By people’s eyes, out of concern for you.
فَأَنتَfor you are الحُسنُbeauty لاnot صِفَةٌa description بِحُسنٍas beautiful
وَأَنتَand you are الخَمرُthe wine لاnot ماwhat فيin يَدَيكاyour hands
For you are beauty itself, not merely described as beautiful;
And you are wine itself, not what is in your hands.
