أَلا رُبَّ تَطليقٍ قَريبٍ مِنَ العُرسِ
I say, with my soul distressed by its sorrows:
I say, as my soul grows weary with sorrows,
Ah, many a divorce comes soon after the wedding.
Alas! Will there be no quick divorce from this marriage?
لَئِنif indeed صِرتِyou have become لِلبَقالِto the grocer ياO شُرُّShurr زَوجَةًa wife
لَئِن صِرتِ لِلبَقالِ يا شُرُّ زَوجَةً
فَلاthen no عَجَبٌwonder قَدmay يَربُضُlie down الكَلبُthe dog فيin الشَمسِthe sun
فَلا عَجَبٌ قَد يَربُضُ الكَلبُ في الشَمسِ
If indeed you have become the grocer's wife, O Shurr,
If you become a grocer's wife, O most wicked wife,
then no wonder—a dog may lie down in the sun.
It would be no wonder for a dog to lay in the sun!
