I recognize the dwelling, its hills and camping grounds,

But time has dealt harshly with it.

It has worn the wind's trailing skirts, which efface its traces,

And the summer and spring of a year gone by.

    تَدعو الهَديلَ وَما وَجَدنَ سَميعا

    And at dawn I wept at the doves' impassioned cries;

They called to the cock-dove, yet found none to hear.

You joined them in wailing and anguish,

And I outdid them in anguish and tears.

    فَاِحزَن فَلَستَ بِمِثلِهِ مَفجوعا

    An aching heart's cares have exhausted consolation;

So mourn, for you are not stricken as it is.

The white gazelles of the dunes have spurned you and severed

The cord of love, and withdrawn utterly from you.

Indeed, we raid our foes, even if they are far away,

And in hosts we shake the entrails of the land.

And upon thrones and pulpits we utter

Marvels of speech, apt and original.

A people who, when angered against their enemies,

Drag iron—spear-butt spikes and coats of mail—

Until their heads part from their bodies,

With blows that make a spring of blood gush forth.

And it is as though our hands were scaring away from them

Birds that had been perched upon their bodies.

And when calamities come upon one of us, head bowed,

They recoil upon their heels, retreating.

And with bounty I have watered the poor and the rich,

And rain waters barren land and fertile alike.

And whenever you wish, in war you will find one looked to with hope,

One of us, obeyed among men and followed.

A noble steed gallops bearing him, its forehead seeming

Cleft by the whiteness of the blaze upon its face.

And it is as though his spearhead's edge were made of his resolve:

The one and the other press forward together.

He hides his stratagem and reckons his own judgment—

Though he is the one who deceived mankind—to be deceived.

And they are the chiefs of men, none besides them,

And the noblest in roots and branches.

    وَالشَمسُ لا تُخفى عَلَيكَ طُلوعا

    Never set others equal to them, for that is their due;

And the sun is not hidden from you when it rises.

And when intercessors set out in the morning for tardy bounty,

That has worn out a needy man, left empty-handed,

Their gifts outstrip promises and delay,

And the petitioners' hopes are swiftly fulfilled.

O you who hope to gain your end through intercession,

You have enslaved yourself to both benefactor and intercessor.
