أَسَرَ القَلبَ فَأَمسى لَدَيهِ

أَسَرَ القَلبَ فَأَمسى لَدَيهِ

فَهوَ يَشكوهُ وَيَشكو إِلَيهِ

فَهوَ يَشكوهُ وَيَشكو إِلَيهِ

He captured the heart, and so it was in his keeping.

He captured my heart, so it complains of him,

So it complains of him and complains to him.

خُلِعَ الحُسنُ عَلى وَجنَتَيهِ

خُلِعَ الحُسنُ عَلى وَجنَتَيهِ

وَرُقى هاروتَ في مُقلَتَيهِ

وَرُقى هاروتَ في مُقلَتَيهِ

Beauty was draped upon his cheeks,

Beauty is unveiled on his cheeks,

And Harut’s spells are in his eyes.

And Venus ascended in his glances.

لَيسَ لي صَبرٌ وَلا أَدَّعيهِ

لَيسَ لي صَبرٌ وَلا أَدَّعيهِ

يُشهِدُ الدَمعُ دَماً سائِليهِ

يُشهِدُ الدَمعُ دَماً سائِليهِ

I have no patience, nor do I claim it.

I have no patience nor do I pretend to.

The tears show their questioners blood.

My tears bear witness to their flowing blood.

لَو رَأى العُذّالُ ما بِقَلبِيَ لَم

لَو رَأى العُذّالُ ما بِقَلبِيَ لَم

يَجِدوا وَاللَهِ غَيرَكَ فيهِ

يَجِدوا وَاللَهِ غَيرَكَ فيهِ

If the reproachers saw what is in my heart, they would not

If the reproachers saw what was in my heart,

Find, by God, anyone but you within it.

By God, they would find none but you in it.

لا أَقولُ البَدرُ أَنتَ وَلا

لا أَقولُ البَدرُ أَنتَ وَلا

غُصنُ بانٍ أَنتَ لا أَشتَهيهِ

غُصنُ بانٍ أَنتَ لا أَشتَهيهِ

I do not say, ‘You are the full moon,’ nor

I say not, "You are the full moon,"

‘You are a bough of the bān tree’—I do not desire it.

Nor "You are a flexile bough," I do not desire that.
