يَجِدُّis earnest هُبوبَthe blowing of الريحِthe wind فيهِin it وَيَهزِلُand is playful
Has a dwelling at al-Duwayra stirred you, or not?
Within it the wind blows now in earnest, now in jest.
قَضَيتُI spent زَمانَthe season of الشَوقِlonging فيin عَرَصاتِهِits courtyards
بِدَمعٍwith tears هَمولٍstreaming فَوقَupon خَدَّيَّmy two cheeks يَهطِلُpouring down
I spent the season of longing in its courtyards,
With streaming tears pouring down upon my cheeks.
وَقَفتُI halted بِهاthere عِيسيmy pale camels تَطيرُthey fly بِزَجرِهاat the shouts urging them
وَيَأمُرُهاand commands them وَحيُthe prompting of الزَمانِTime فَتُرقِلُso they trot swiftly
I halted my pale camels there, though they fly at the urging cry,
And Time's prompting commands them, so they trot swiftly.

Eagerly chasing their forefeet with their hindfeet, as
A claimant's hand demands a debt withheld by another.
وَبِالقَصرِand at al-Qasr إِذwhen خاطَsewed shut الخَلِيُّthe carefree man جُفونَهُhis eyelids
عَنانِيَcaught my attention بَرقٌlightning بِالدُجَيلِover al-Dujayl مُسَلسَلُchainlike
And at al-Qasr, when the carefree man had sewn his eyelids shut,
Chainlike lightning over al-Dujayl caught my attention.
وَإِنّيand I indeed لَضَوءِto the light of البَرقِthe lightning مِنfrom نَحوِthe direction of دارِهاher home
إِذاwhen ماemphatic particle عَنانيcaught my attention لَمحُهُits flash لَمُوَكَّلُindeed devoted
And I, to lightning's light from the direction of her home,
Whenever its flash draws me, am wholly devoted.
تَشَقَّقَsplit open وَاِستَدعىand beckoned كَماas صَدَعَcleft الدُجىthe darkness
سَنىthe radiance of قَبَسٍa flame فيin جَذوَةٍa firebrand يَتَأَكَّلُburning away
It split open and beckoned, as the darkness was cleft by
The radiance of a flame burning away within a firebrand.
وَلِلَّهِand to God belongs ميثاقٌa pledge لَدَيَّin my keeping نَقَضتُهُI broke it
وَقُلتُand I said دَعوهُleave him خالِياًunrestrained يَتَنَقَّلُto wander
And, by God, what a pledge I held and broke!
And I said, 'Leave him free to wander.'
وَوَعدٌand a promise وَخُلفٌand a broken promise بَعدَهُafter it وَتَمَنُّعٌand coy refusal
وَسُرعَةُand the swiftness of هُجرانٍestrangement وَوَصلٌand union مُوَصَّلُunbroken
And a promise, and its breach thereafter, and coy refusal,
And swift estrangement, and unbroken union.
وَقَدand indeed أَشهَدُI witness الغاراتِthe raids وَالمَوتُand Death شاهِدٌa witness
يَجورُdeals unjustly بِأَطرافِwith the points of الرِماحِthe spears وَيَعدِلُand deals justly
And I have witnessed raids, with Death a witness,
Now dealing unjustly with spear-points, now justly,
بِطَعنٍwith spear-thrusts تَضيعُis lost الكَفَّthe hand فيin لَهَواتِهِtheir gaping throats
وَضَربٍand blows كَماas شُقَّwas torn الرِداءُthe cloak المُرَعبَلُtattered
With thrusts in whose gaping throats the hand is lost,
And blows like the rending of a tattered cloak.
وَخَيلٍand horses طَواهاwore them lean القَورُthe flat-topped hills حَتّىuntil كَأَنَّهاas though they were
أَنابيبُsegments سُمرٍof brown spears مِنfrom قَناthe lance-reeds of الخَطِّal-Khatt ذُبَّلُwithered
And horses the hills had worn lean, until they seemed
Segments of brown, withered lance-reeds from al-Khatt.
صَبَبناwe poured عَلَيهاupon them ظالِمينَacting unjustly سِياطَناour whips
فَطارَتso flew بِهاwith them أَيدٍforelegs سِراعٍswift وَأَرجُلُand hindlegs
We poured our whips upon them, acting unjustly,
So swift forelegs and hindlegs bore them flying.
وَكُلُّand all الَّذيthat سَرَّpleased الفَتىa young man قَدindeed أَصَبتُهُI attained it
وَساعَدَنيand favored me مِنهُof it أَخيرٌthe last وَأَوَّلُand the first
And all that ever pleased a young man I have attained,
And its last and first alike have favored me.
فَمِنso for أَيِّwhat شَيءٍthing ياO اِبنَةَdaughter of القَومِthe tribe أَحتَويshould I hold fast
عَلىto مُهجَتيmy life أَوor أَيِّwhat شَيءٍthing أُؤَمَّلِshould I hope for
So for what, O daughter of the tribe, should I hold fast
To my life—or what should I hope for?
إِذاwhen المَرءُa man أَفنىhas used up صُبحَthe morning of يَومٍa day وَثانِياًand a second
أَتاهُcomes to him صَباحٌa morning بَعدَafter ذَلِكَthat مُقبِلُapproaching
When a man has used up one day's morning, and a second,
After that, another morning comes advancing toward him.
وَيَتَّبِعُand he pursues الآمالَhopes مَوقِعَthe landing-place of لَحظِهِhis glance
فَلَيسَso there is no لَهُfor him ماas long as عاشَhe lives فيamong الناسِpeople مَنزِلُresting place
And he pursues hopes wherever his glance falls,
So he has no resting place among people while he lives.
وَلِلدَهرِand Time has سِرٌّa secret سَوفَwill يَظهَرُbe revealed أَمرُهُits nature
وَلِلناسِand people have وَزنٌa weighing جائِرٌunjust سَوفَwill يَعدِلُbecome just
And Time has a secret whose nature will be revealed,
And people's unjust balance will yet be set right.
