    Do you cultivate a garden whose plantings have thrived for you,

    and destroy the affection of a congenial friend?

    وَإِغداقُ عيدانٍ رُواءِ الحَدائِقِ

    For its chief marvel is a vineyard whose growth is tender,

    and a profusion of boughs, the gardens’ splendor;

    فَمِن هادِرٍ يَدعو الإِناثَ وَصافِقِ

    the gray doves rest at noon in its trees,

    some cooing to call the females, others flapping their wings;

    and a spring gushing with water, its soil sweet,

    that recedes at the hands of the freely pouring irrigators.

    Yet that is nothing but the world’s deceit and glitter,

    and occasions for spending that lays waste to your wealth.

    Perhaps, on the land you own, you will find

    a replacement for us? No, by the Lord of the sunrises!
