وَمُعتَلِّand making excuses المَواعِدِthe promises ذيpossessed of مِكاسِhaggling
مَليٍّfull بِالتَأَبّيof refusal وَالشِماسِand defiance
And one evasive in his promises, given to haggling,

يُناديcalls out to فيin الهَوىlove قَلباًa heart جَباناًtimid
تَرَجَّحَwavered بَينَbetween أَطماعٍhopes وَياسِand despair
Calls out in love to a timid heart

لَناfor us فيin وَجهِهِhis face بُستانُa garden حُسنٍof beauty
مُباحٍpermitted لِلعُيونِto the eyes بَلاwithout مِساسِtouching
In his face we have a garden of beauty,
His face, a garden of beauty we're allowed
Open to the eyes, but not to touch.
To let our eyes wander without being cowed

He gave me wine from his hand in the midday heat,
He poured me from his hand a draught so pure
And drowsiness drifted across his eyelids.
As his lids weighed down with sleep insecure

And his left hand was clad in a jug,
To his right, a maiden with a pitcher leans
And his right hand was crowned with a cup.
To his left, another offers wine it seems
