وَلَيلٍand many a night قَدindeed سَهِرتُI stayed awake وَنامَand slept فيهِin it
نَدامىdrinking companions صُرِّعواwere laid low حَوليaround me رُقوداasleep
And many a night I stayed awake, while there slept
And a night in which I was sleepless
Drinking companions, laid low around me in slumber.
While my boon companions lay sprawled around in slumber
I converse by night with فيهِin it قَهقَهَةَloud laughter القَنانيthe bottles
وَمِزماراًand a flute يُحَدِّثُنيspeaks to me وَعوداand an oud
I pass it conversing with the laughter of bottles,
I sipped from the glass the song of the lutes
And a flute that speaks to me, and an oud.
And a pipe spoke to me of longing
يَكادُnearly اللَيلَthe night يَرجُمُنيpelts me بِنِجمٍwith a star
وَقالَand said أَراهُI see him as شَيطاناًa devil مَريداrebellious
The night nearly pelts me with a star,
Until the night well nigh pelted me with stars
And says, 'I see him as a rebellious devil.'
And taunted: “I espy thee, a rebel demon!”
