وَشَمسِand a sun لَيلٍnight طَرَقتُهاI visited her by night فَبَداthen appeared
وَشَمسِ لَيلٍ طَرَقتُها فَبَدا
مِنهاfrom her صُدودٌa rebuff ماnot كُنتُI was أَحسَبُهُI expect it
مِنها صُدودٌ ما كُنتُ أَحسَبُهُ
And a sun—I visited her by night; then there appeared
And I visited a sun of the night; then there appeared
from her a turning-away I had never expected.
From her a rebuff I had not expected.
تَقولُshe says مَنwho ذاthis وَلَستُand I am not أَعرِفُهُI know him
تَقولُ مَن ذا وَلَستُ أَعرِفُهُ
ياO لَصَّةَfemale thief القَلبِthe heart جِئتُI came أَطلُبُهُI seek it
يا لَصَّةَ القَلبِ جِئتُ أَطلُبُهُ
She says, “Who is this? I do not know him.”
She says, “Who is this? I do not know him.”
O thief of my heart, I have come seeking it.
O thief of my heart, I have come to seek it.
